A jockstrap (also known as a jock, jock strap, strap, supporter, or athletic supporter) is underwear designed for supporting a guy’s “equipment” during sports or other rather physical activities. A jockstrap is normally made of a waistband with a supportive pouch for your manhood and two straps attached to the base of the pouch and to the left and right sides of the waistband at the hip. The pouch, in some varieties, may be fitted with a pocket to hold an impact resistant cup to protect the balls and/or penis from getting injured.

The jockstrap was born in 1874 by C. F. Bennett, of a Chicago sporting goods company, Sharp & Smith, to provide comfort and support for bicycle jockeys riding the cobblestone streets of Boston. In 1897 Bennett’s newly-formed Bike Web Company patented and began mass-producing the Bike Jockey Strap. The Bike Web Company later became known as the Bike Company. Today, Bike is still the market leader in jockstrap sales.
The jockstrap was also influential in early medicine. This came with the invention of the Heidelberg Electric Belt.This is a low-voltage electric jockstrap that claimed to cure kidney disorders, insomnia, erectile dysfunction, and other ailments. A jockstrap that cures you, how great is that! Today, jockstraps continue to be used for certain medical purposes.

The popularity of the jockstrap faded away after the initial hype. These days they are fully back in fashion, which is reflected in the fact that new brands and companies are beginning to introduce their own line of jockstraps, such as Calvin Klein.
Due to the cooling benefits of the jockstrap, there are also links now being identified between male fertility and the use of a jockstrap. As the jockstrap is designed to lift the male genitalia away from the body, the temperature within the testicles is reduced enabling a more effective production and maintenance of sperm within the male, thus reducing the risk of infertility.
