Debate over Brighton Pride’s ‘over-commercialisation’ has lessons for other Pride festivals

This time last year our friends at PinkUk ran an article on the early liberation years of Brighton & Hove Pride. This year they fast-forwarded to the present to understand why there have been calls by some activists to boycott the festival which brings in around 500,000 people to the south coast city every August.

In a new article PinkUk explores why and suggests what happens in Brighton may influence similar festivals around the world.

It asks whether the festival has become too commercialised and less ‘Pink’ in the same city that has been dubbed the ‘LGBTQ+ capital of the UK’?

Reform it, don’t boycott it

PinkUk suggests that reclaiming Pride is what matters so it’s not just about sectional groups promoting their own agendas.  Everyone should be there primarily to celebrate LGBTQ+ freedom and fun.

The organisers need to address the sponsorship criteria and the cost of the ticketing. There were some stalwarts of the gay liberation movement who still attended. This included the Peter Tatchell Foundation with a contingent of reps from countries where LGBTQ+ people are under extreme threat.

The festival organisers have welcomed a political side so let’s give some credit where it is due and constructive criticism where needed? We’re a global movement.
